Rajshahi Traffic Jam

Rajshahi city also sees traffic jam now

Jam of Rajshahi
Rajshahi district has also started witnessing traffic jam in this Eid season which is a rare scenario for the region but a very usual one for the capital. Although law enforcers have imposed special traffic rules, the traffic pressure is on due to a huge number of unlicensed battery-run auto-rickshaws which are entering the city carrying Eid shoppers from different towns and are plying city roads defying traffic rules, said Rajshahi City Corporation sources.
For taking passengers, these auto-rickshaws stand anywhere on roads or at intersections or even on Rajshahi-Dhaka highway. Moreover, trucks and banned human haulers are also plying city roads all day.
Accidents are occurring almost every day due to reckless driving. Makeshift shops and hawkers especially in Ganakpara, Shaheb Bazar and New Market areas have narrowed down the roads intensifying the traffic jam.
RCC acting mayor Nizam-ul Azim said the authorities are not conducting drives against the vehicles as many poor people get involved in this travel business during Eid for some extra money.
Police said they are facing many cases where passengers, locals and drivers together obstruct them to take any action.

Rajshahi Govt. P.N Girls' High Schoo

History of Govt. P.N Girls' High Schoo
The Main Gate of School

Govt. P.N. Girls’ High School is situated in the heart of Rajshahi city Bearing the remembrance of the famous saint Shah Makhdum Rupose(R:). It is one of the oldest and most famous education institutions of the city. About 150 years ago the school was established with help of some education lovers of Rampur-Boalia. It is known from culcutta review that the school was established many years before 1868. The reference that of having a Girls’ School along with the mission donated school is found in the book of account of Mr. Hunter . Kazi Mohammad Michher said, ‘‘Todays P.N. School seems to be the primary stage of that very government donated school.”

In 1868, Raja Pramathnath Ray(1849-1883) of Dighapatia, adopted son of Prasannanath Ray(1826-1861), donate six thousand rupees to Rajshahi Girls’ High School. Besides, he donated an annual government ‘promissory note’ amounting to Rs. 180.00 only in order to meet the expenditure of the school. He arranged three scholarships for the development of this school. He had four sons and one daughter. They were Pramadanath, Basanta Kumar, Sarat Kumar, Hemandra Kumar and Indraprova by name respectively. Pramadanath Ray(1849-1883) the eldest son of pramathnath donated Rs. 6000.00 to P.N. School, Rajshahi for the construction of a building.

The Royal families of Dighapatia donated huge funds for the permanent establishment of the school. For this reason the school is named after the name of Raja Pramathnath Ray (1849-1883). In short it was called Raja P.N. Ray Girls’ High school. However, it can be stated here that Brajendra Lal Shaha, son of Harilal Shaha, Asha Lata Devi, c/o Sree Kalidash, Sree Ganesh Roy Shing & Sree Ganga Moni dashya, issues of Late Haricharan Roy, Sree Baidanath Chowdhury, son of Kamalakanto Chowdhury, are the people who sold lands to the school.

In 1928 Rajshahi P.N. Girls’ school turned into High School. Then the responsibilities of officiating the school went to the Raja of Dighapatia so that the school could be developed. Bassanta Kumar gave a company paper valued Rs. 10,200.00 to the P.N. High School at a time. A building was built with expenses of this money. Later Hemendra Kumar the younger brother of Pramadanath built an office building with the expenses of Rs. 10,000.00.

Before the partition of the Indian sub-continent, this school was governed and maintained by the Royal family of Digapatia. After partition a new community was formed on 30 March,1947. The district Magistrate of Rajshahi was the chairman of the community as designation was assigned. In 1960, Raja P.N. Ray Girls’ High School was nationalized and it was name Govt. P.N. Girls’ High School, Rajshahi. With the increase of the number of the students the Bengal Government built a new two-storied building at the cost of 7090 Taka.

In 1991 the school turned into a double shift school and each class contained four sections. The E.E.D. built one two-storied building and a hostel. The hostel can accommodate 32 students. Now the school is running very smoothly.

Rajshahi Verendra Research Museum

Varendra Research Museum

Varendra Museum

(Bengali: বরেন্দ্র জাদুঘর) is a museum, research center and popular visitor attraction located at the heart of Rajshahi town and maintained by Rajshahi University in Bangladesh. It is considered the oldest museum in Bangladesh. Varendra museum was the first museum to be established in East Bengal in 1910. The museum started out as the collection for Varendra Anushandan Samiti or Varendra Investigation Society got its current name in 1919. The Rajahs of Rajshahi and Natore, notably prince Sharat Kumar Ray, donated their personal collections to Varendra Museum. Varendra refers to an ancient janapada roughly corresponding to modern northern Bangladesh

 History:

Varendra (or Barind) was a region of Bengal, now in Bangladesh. It included the Pundravardhana or Pundra Kingdom region. According to Cunningham the boundary of Varendra was the Ganges and the Mahananda on the west, the Karatoya on the east, the Padma on the south and the land between Koochbihar and the Terai on the north. The Varendra Brahmins originated from this region.
Ancient Bengal did not have any Brahmins in its community. It is popularly believed that Brahmins were brought in to preach Hindutva, though really not the Vedic Hinduism as it is commonly believed, but more of the Pouranik Hinduism type, which evolved after Buddhism flourished. This Pouranik Hinduism is what we know as Brahmanism . Varendra (Barendra) Bhumi, i.e. modern-day North Bengal, had its Brahminism awakening soon after the south got its share. Shyamal Varma, a Kshatriya King brought five Brahmanas from Kanouj---- Sanaka; Bhardwaja; Savarna; Sandilya; Vasistha. The Bhatariya, Maitreya, Satar, Baghshree and Laheria villages soon gave birth to the Brahmin clans of Bhaduri, Moitra, Sanyal, Bagchi and Lahiri. These came to be known as the Varendra (Barendra) Brahmins
The Settlement of Varendra, spoken as Janakabhu (fatherland) was one of the most flourishing territories of ancient Indian sub-continent. We come to know from different literary and epigraphic evidences that a separate school of artisans earned wide reputation here at the reign of Pala dynasty and the streams of art making were uninterrupted until the Sena dynasty.
Some of the leading and enlightened citizens of Rajshahi felt the necessity and justification of establishing such an institution that would explore the precious past of this region. Henceforth, ‘The Varendra Research Society’ was established in 1910, and the founder of the Society Kumar Sarat Kumar Ray, the scion of Dighapatiya Royal family accompanied by Aksaya Kumar Maitreya, a leading lawyer and renowned historian; Ramaprasad Chanda, a reputed scholar in history, art and archaeology and others explored a good number of archaeological and historical artifacts excavating in some villages of Rajshahi.
Then, the conviction grew in Kumar’s mind if a centre of archeological research was to be established at Rajshahi, the finds should be preserved there as the nucleus of a local museum. Accordingly, in order to collect, preserve, study and research the history and culture of ancient and medieval Bangal in general and of Varendra region in particular, three worthy sons of the soil mentioned above took the noble effort to establish a museum.
Thus, the Varendra Research Society and Museum was set up at Rajshahi in 1910. In fact, it is not only the premier institution of its kind, but also the splendid accomplishment of its organization in Bangladesh. The role of the society concerning the museum was that of proprietor and caretaker. However, this was formally inaugurated on 27 September 1910 and was registered in 1914 in accordance with the Indian Society Act-1860.
Varendra Museum was the first museum to be established in erstwhile East Bengal in 1910. The museum started out as the collection for Varendra Anushandhan Samiti or Varendra Investigation Society and got its current name in 1919. The Rajahs of Rajshahi and Natore, notably Prince Sharat Kumar Ray, donated their personal collections to Varendra Museum. Varendra refers to an ancient janapada roughly corresponding to modern northern Bangladesh.
Excavation at Sompur Bihara was started by the society along with the University of Calcutta in 1923. In 1964, the museum became a part of Rajshahi University.

RAJSHAHI, May 22, 2015 (BSS)- Rajshahi, a potential place for industrialization, is going to get a car (automobile) factory with foreign investment.

Three famous Korean car manufacturing companies have taken the initiative in cooperation with Ena Group in Bangladesh. To hasten the process, an 11-member team from the three companies- Zinwao, BMG and KRW- is scheduled to visit Rajshahi.
Dr Muslem Uddin, Deputy Managing Director of Ena Group, told the local journalists that the initiative has been taken as part of establishing industries in the hitherto neglected Rajshahi.

He also said Rajshahi BSCIC Industrial estate has been selected for the venture. The team will visit the site to gather knowledge about trade and business here on Sunday next.
Chairman of Ena Group Engineer Enamul Haque, MP, said on commissioning of the factory trade and business in Rajshahi will be expanded besides creating employment opportunities.
Meanwhile, Md Muniruzzaman, President of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, termed the venture as laudable and called for more foreign investment in the region.

He said more foreign investment towards industrialization, especially agriculture and its processing sector in the region has become an urgent need for making the sector more vibrant besides encouraging the growers, chamber leaders and economists here said.

He viewed if the investment were enhanced substantially the agricultural sector coupled with ICT sector will bring an unprecedented success for the region. Quick implementation of the proposed Hi-tech Park in Rajshahi could be the effective means of flourishing the agro-based economy.

Time has come to consider the issue of foreign investment in Rajshahi's agriculture and its problems and prospects to find out a reasonable solution in this regard.

Apart from this, farmers-friendly banking has become an urgent need for strengthening the agro-based economy of the region thereby the agricultural products can enrich the export-list more besides minimizing the existing gap between export and import.

Quoting the official records, the chamber leader said volume of total foreign investment in Rajshahi since 1971 to 2014 is only 0.014 percent. The figure is very negligible towards enriching the export list besides minimizing the existing gap between export and import.

Referring to the existing statistics in various developed and developing countries he said foreign investment is always supportive towards raising value labourers besides boosting their numbers.

He underscored the need for setting up agro-processing industries to ensure maximum utilization of agricultural products.

Establishment of agro-processing industries would encourage the farmers to grow more high valued products for their higher income. He termed the industrialization as the most relevant indicator of the country's progress and prosperity.

The agro-based industries constitute about 50 percent of the country's total industries, employing 60 percent of the total labor forces in the industrial sector.
